Hello

Welcome to my blog. During the day (and sometimes the night) I teach and do research into Old Norse language and literature and the Viking Age. The purpose of this blog is to record those experiences and observations that do not reach the usual academic stomping grounds of journals, scholarly monographs and excavation reports - i.e. my encounters with Vikings in the media, in popular culture, and on my travels in the Viking world. The aim is to record these for myself, but it might be that you, too, dear reader, are interested. If so, please feel free to comment.

  1. Hi, this is a bit of a strange request...my 4 1/2 year-old is into Vikings in a big way and I am subscribing to your blog to keep him updated... but he is dying to know a few Old Norse words - hello, goodbye etc. I've been searching around but obviously the focus seems to be on how to read runes rather than have conversation. Any ideas? I'm a linguist so I'm afraid I encourage the little dear...

  2. Dear Gail,
Many thanks for subscribing to my blog and I am pleased to hear you are encouraging your son in his linguistic interests!
I apologise for not responding to your query - unfortunately I get many such requests, from all kinds of people asking all kinds of questions, and I simply do not have the time to answer them all - answering them properly takes more time than you would think and I do not want to answer them in a hurried and useless way. However, (and this is to everyone who might also want to ask a question) if you follow the links on my blog you may find something useful.
All the best from the Viqueen.

  3. Hi there,
My name is Philip Stevens and I have recently shot a Viking short film, so far the film has been nominated for 4 international awards. I'd really appreciate your opinions. http://vimeo.com/15896673

    All the best

  4. @ Philip: Thanks for drawing my attention to your film, and congratulations on your nominations. I can't honestly say I enjoyed the film, though. How about another one on the more cultured aspects of the Vikings?
